A Citizen Uprising
We are part of an extraordinary movement of Americans rising up across the country to protect our values, our neighbors, and our democracy. The movement was formed by a small group of former congressional staffers who were aghast at the profound threat of a Trump presidency. They leapt into action and published Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda. Thousands of citizen groups then sprang up almost overnight, using the knowledge and approach outlined in this guide.
Stand Up San Francisco is one of these “Indivisible” groups. We follow the Indivisible guide, which tells us:
- Every member of Congress is focused on their next election, and cares almost obsessively about their public image
- Because of this, using the right tactics, a small group of constituents can have outsized impact
We focus on our members of Congress here in California District 12 – Senators Feinstein and Harris, and Congresswoman Pelosi.
We meet with senior staff of our representatives on a regular basis. Before we go to their offices, we prepare talking points. After we meet, we write an action report so everyone knows what transpired.
We also do call campaigns. Each week we send our members a few simple call scripts on the most time-sensitive issues. If you check out our blog you’ll get a feel for what we send. When a member of Congress gets a high volume of calls on an issue, they tend to pay attention.
In addition to meeting with our representatives, we also hold a monthly group meeting at the Noe Valley library. Here we discuss the previous month’s progress and fine tune our direction. And we have social events! In these stressful times, it is more important than ever to take care of ourselves, unplug, and spend time with like-minded others.
Check out our calendar to see upcoming events.
Working with Blue Members of Congress
You may be asking, why do we need to work with our members of Congress here in very blue San Francisco? One thing to keep in mind is that our Senators represent the entire state of California, which is not uniformly blue. And our representatives hold powerful positions in Congress. Congresswoman Pelosi is the House Minority Leader, which means she leads all House Democrats. Senator Feinstein holds high-level positions on the committee that is investigating Trump, and the committee that reviews judicial nominees. Senator Harris represents us on several additional committees, including the one focused on our environment and infrastructure. We want to make sure our representatives wield their power on our behalf.
There are times when we want our representatives to take action they would otherwise not take, and we need to push.
We thank our members of Congress when they stand up for our values. This is important, and helps them maintain their resolve in the face of strong political headwinds.
There are times when we don’t know what our representatives can do about an issue. When we meet with them, we ask about that.
We also brainstorm with them, and try to find ways to collaborate and make them more effective (for example, giving them personal stories on a particular issue).
Our Movement is Working
The force of thousands of Indivisible groups working in unison – standing indivisible – is winning us concrete victories despite Republican control of both chambers of Congress. We are also changing public opinion on critical issues. Our movement is working.
We invite you to join us.
