Good news for your holiday Sunday

I’m just back from our monthly general meeting, always an energizing experience. I’m humbled by the integrity and thoughtfulness of our members. This month, Shannon and I tried an experiment. We ran the meeting as a working session to come up with talking points for the next round of Member of Congress actions.

Our policy team – Mary Beth, Patrick and Paul – has accomplished extraordinary things over the last two years and change. We’re eternally indebted to them for their contributions. As their attention turns to other priorities, we’re delighted to welcome new policy team members Aina and Katherine.

And we are delighted to welcome you. Talking Points should represent the concerns of Stand Up San Francisco as a group. We’re encouraged by the results of today’s working session, and we’ll continue this experiment. If you can’t make it to a general meeting, please don’t hesitate to email us your suggestions for Talking Points.

Now for the rest of today’s good news:

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Speaker Pelosi and thank her for calling on Robert Mueller to testify in front of Congress. Televised Congressional hearings are more likely than any other channel to get the truth in front of the American public.

A new hope

There has never been a Congress like itSworn in today, the 116th Congress includes over 100 women, the largest number ever. Membership of the Congressional Black and Hispanic Caucuses are at an all-time high. The youngest ever, the first openly bisexual, the first two Native American, and the first two Muslim congresswomen all took their seats.

Thanks to so many of you who trekked out to CA-10 to canvass for him, our neighbor Josh Harder was among them.

But for me, the high point of the day came when our own Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi updated her Facebook page from “Minority Leader” to “House Speaker.”

For the first time since the 2016 election, we have a legislative foothold from which to resist the Trump agenda.

Thank Harris and Feinstein for these surprise wins

It’s another hectic and confusing news week, but let’s highlight some good news, just in time for the holidays:

  • Lynching is now a federal crime, thanks to the Justice for Victims of Lynching Act, which passed the Senate unanimously. The Act was sponsored by Cory Booker, Tim Scott and our own Kamala Harris
  • When the GOP tried to bundle the Israel Anti-Boycott Act with the appropriations bill, Bernie Sanders and our own Dianne Feinstein wrote a sharp letter of rebuke
  • And while it’s too late to save the people who have already been killed in mass shootings enabled by these devices, bump stocks have finally been banned

Your advocacy gives our Senators the political cover to do what’s right. Thank you.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senator Harris and thank her for speaking up for victims of lynching. Call Senator Feinstein and thank her for defending free speech, and for her long and principled track record on common sense gun laws.

Have a wonderful holiday, and thanks for all you do,

Rachel

Congratulations. Let’s get to work

We got out the vote. The blue wave hit a sea wall, as we knew it would. The Senate and many, many Congressional districts are gerrymandered so that Democrats must vote in far greater numbers to win – even leaving aside the blatant voter suppression we saw in Georgia, North Dakota, and elsewhere.

But we took back the House. We won many important down-ballot races. We’ve given ourselves a fighting chance. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You can take a moment, now. Take a deep breath. There is hope.

Of course the work begins again immediately. Leave it to this president to fire his attorney-general the morning after the midterms and replace him with a crony.

This is an attack on the Mueller investigation. It’s time to march.

That’s our Senator!

Did you see Senator Harris grilling SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh last week? She went after him on abortion as well as the Mueller investigation, exposing his lies, corruption, and unwillingness to prosecute Trump for any crimes he’s committed.

In publicly opposing Kavanaugh, Senator Harris is fighting hard for Democracy. She’s fighting for us. Let’s make sure she keeps it up.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senator Harris and thank her for opposing Kavanaugh’s nomination and for holding his feet to the fire in these hearings.

Extra credit: Call Senator Feinstein and ask her why she hasn’t committed to vote against Kavanaugh.

Don’t like calls? Use Resistbot.
