What’s next?

Thursday, when it started to look like we were going to lose on the tax bill, I realized: I wasn’t discouraged. I was angry. And now that the Senate has passed the bill, I am trying to hold onto that anger. Anger is fuel. Anger motivates us to take action.

However you’re feeling today, last night’s vote was a big loss. It’s not quite over yet, but most likely, the House will pass this bill as-is. But consider this: it’s December, and this is the very first time Republicans might actually have a major legislative victory. Nearly a year has gone by without a big win: that’s a huge testament to your strength and resilience. THANK YOU.

Trump and the Republicans who work exclusively for the wealthy top 1% would love for us to get so discouraged by this loss that we give up the Resistance. But if the history of progressive action in this country has taught us anything, it’s that standing up the next day and getting back into the fight is the way we win.

So what’s next? What do we do with our anger and frustration? The Senate calendar isn’t slowing down, which means we can’t either. Congress will need to pass a spending bill to fund the government by December 8 — and we need EVERY DEMOCRAT IN CONGRESS to pledge to withhold their vote for any spending bill that doesn’t include the DREAM Act. Republicans are trying to avoid including it in the funding bill, so it’s up to Democrats to stand up for Dreamers.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three MoCs and thank them for standing strong on taxes (positive reinforcement is important!). Then demand that they take the Dreamer Pledge. (script)

Bringing people together

SUBJECT LINE: Bringing people together

The internet isn’t nearly so important as racial injustice and vanquishing white supremacy, nor smashing patriarchy, nor rescuing our planet from looters and climate vandals, nor feudal inequality: but EVERY ONE of those fights will be won or lost with the internet.
—Cory Doctorow

We have three weeks to protect free speech on the internet.

Comcast, Verizon and AT&T want to end net neutrality so they can control what we see and do online. Make no mistake: ending net neutrality would strangle activism and organizing, so much of which occurs online. It would also have personal effects for each of us who use the internet to work, socialize, and connect with others.

The current rules prohibit internet providers from censoring, throttling, and paid prioritization—”fast lanes” for sites that pay, and slow lanes for everyone else. Our reps are strong defenders of net neutrality, but they are under tremendous pressure to cave in or compromise. They need to hear from you that they must protect the free and open internet, and that you support their efforts to do so.

Congress votes on this issue on December 14th.

“Net neutrality is doomed if we’re silent,” says FCC Commnissioner Mignon Clyburn. “The only way to defend something is to weigh in.”

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three representatives and demand that they protect net neutrality. (call tool and script)

Crucial events this week

It’s recess week, and that means our representatives are at home where they can hear you in person. It’s all hands on deck to stop TrumpCare AGAIN, this time as part of the #TrumpTaxScam. And have you heard? The GOP have sneaked anti-choice “personhood” language into the bill! This week, raise your voice to demand that our representatives do everything in their power to stop it.

TODAY at noon: Join Stand Up SF members at Congresswoman Pelosi’s office to thank her for her ongoing defense of the Affordable Care Act (now once again at risk), and talk strategy for winning back the House in 2018. SIGN UP NOW!

TOMORROW at noon: Come out for an all-Indivisibles protest in front of Senator Feinstein’s office to stop the tax scam and ACA sabotage. Tell Senator Feinstein she must withhold consent to proceed on this bill. Learn more and sign up.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call both senators and demand that the “personhood” language be removed from the tax bill. (call tool and script)

Blue state blues? Here’s something you can do.

The latest info on the #TrumpTaxScam is that it’s a return of TrumpCare: 13 million people will lose their health insurance. This is on top of the cuts to education, environment, and other vital services. Outrageous. But we know our MoCs are already going to vote against it, and that that alone won’t be enough. So what’s a blue state resident to do?

At our last office visits, we learned that neither Senator Feinstein nor Senator Harris has committed to withhold consent to vote on this terrible bill. We can’t count on them to do everything in their power to prevent this catastrophe unless we demand it.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call both senators and tell them they must withhold consent on votes in the Senate to slow down, and hopefully stop, TrumpCare and the Tax Scam. (script)

Save the date for our holiday party, the evening of December 20th!

Indictment Monday, Tax Scam Wednesday

I will admit to a tiny frisson of glee on Friday when I learned that the first charges in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Trump’s collusion with Russia were approved by a grand jury. This is what it takes to build a case against the Trump administration that could get even Republicans on board. Just as important, it’s the first step toward holding Trump accountable for election tampering—and possibly a lot more.

Plus, it’s really pissing him off.

But it’s important to maintain our focus on the Trump Tax Scam, which will land in Congress on Wednesday. As Topher Spiro at the Center for American Progress says, it’s this tax bill that could be Trump’s Waterloo. Republicans are trying to ram this through the same way they did with TrumpCare: a rushed, hushed up process, with no public hearing. They want to use reconciliation to pass the bill with only 51 votes (just like they tried with health care). They need this win badly. And we need to take it away from them.

As a reminder, this budget is a massive tax break for the wealthy, while raising taxes on the middle class and slashing Medicare and Medicaid.

We need Democratic MoCs to stand up and do whatever they can to slow down this bill so we have time to fight it—including, for Senators, withholding their consent. All three of our MoCs have spoken out against the Trump budget. Now we must make sure they do everything in their power to slow down and expose the Trump Tax Scam.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and demand that they withold consent. (script)
