This is a fight we can win.

Trump announces his Supreme Court nominee tomorrow. It doesn’t matter who it is, they will be terrible: committed to overturning Roe v. Wade and attacking the Affordable Care Act, voting rights, environmental protections, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Indivisible is fighting this nomination nationwide alongside many other civil rights groups. This is going to be a hard one to win: we need to get 51 senators (including two Republicans) to refuse to confirm any nominee. But we can win. It will require massive, sustained, collective action.

I’m proud to say our action at Sen. Harris’ office this week is fully booked, and we will be speaking out in coalition with members of NARAL to drive home the importance of this fight. But there’s a call we still need to make.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senator Feinstein and ask what she is doing to make sure Democratic senators refuse Trump’s nominees, and how she is securing Republican votes.

Don’t get mad. Get organized

I’m not going to lie to you. Between the awful SCOTUS decisions on fake health centersgerrymanderingthe Muslim ban and unions, and the resignation of Justice Kennedy, it’s been an exhausting, depressing week.

If you feel terrible right now, it’s because you care about other people. I’m proud of you.

In the dark days after the 2016 election, the only thing that could cheer me up was resistance. It’s still true. Let’s turn this grief into action.

Start small. Hold Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to his own standards. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut said it best:

Here it is, plain and simple. McConnell set the rule. Now, he and Senate Republicans need to follow it. No vote on a Supreme Court nominee until after the new Congress is seated.

Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein were quick to add their voices. Now add yours.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris. Thank them for being so ready to insist on the McConnell rule. Ask them to use their influence to hold Democratic Senators together on this matter.

If you don’t want to call, use ResistBot.

End the lies

Every day in America, women in search of vital health services are deceived by fake women’s health centers masquerading as abortion clinics. At today’s meeting, we learned that even here in San Francisco, women who need contraception or abortions are tricked by misleading advertising into visiting fake “health” clinics, where they are told outright lies about their options.

Now, the FACT Act, which requires these facilities to post basic information about the medical training (or lack thereof) of their staff, is under attack, and the Supreme Court is about to hand down a decision about whether California can regulate these fake women’s health centers. This is the first abortion-related case to be decided under this court.

Meanwhile, the “domestic gag rule” attack on Title X is moving forward nationally, forcing real medical providers to lie by omission about abortions, while loosening restrictions on fake health centers so they can continue to push anti-choice lies and propaganda. No policy this extreme has ever been implemented in the United States before — and the consequences could be devastating. Many patients — a significant number of whom are people of color — would be cut off entirely from reproductive care.

We’re facing a huge threat to reproductive freedom. We need to fight like our rights and lives depend on it, because they do.

TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Sign up to attend a rally at City Hall, hosted by NARAL Pro-Choice California, on the day of the Supreme Court decision, and share the link with your friends.

Send a public comment to the Department of Health and Human Services, demanding they drop the gag rule. Get talking points here.

STAND UP SF AND THE 2018 ELECTIONS

Today, we discussed with Stand Up SF members how we can best use our time between now and November. Without a Democratic majority in Congress, we will continue to hear from our representatives that there isn’t much we can do to stop the GOP from continuing to erode our rights, so Indivisible national is urging all groups to focus on activities that will flip seats.

Among our members, there was a broad consensus that getting out the vote is crucial right now, and should even take precedence over our MoC visits for the moment. Leadership will be discussing our next steps and will keep you posted. Meanwhile, if you have thoughts on this issue, your voice is welcome at policy@standupsf.net

The GOP loves free speech, unless it’s about abortion

One of the Trump administration’s first acts in office was enacting the “global gag rule,” which strips funding for health care providers around the world unless they agree not to mention abortion. This leads to denial of crucial health care in all the countries the US provides aid to.

Now, politicians in the House are working to force this disastrous policy in the United States — and we need to stop it before it gets any further. The domestic gag rule would take away Title X funds from health care providers unless they agree never to mention abortions.

Four million people across the country get their health care through Title X, and they would be unable to access health care or even know all their health care options. This is unprecedented — and the consequences would be devastating.

With our right to control our bodies being stripped away state by state (Iowa just passed a law outlawing abortion after six weeks, when most women don’t even know they’re pregnant), it’s vital that we protect the right to choose on a federal level.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Congresswoman Pelosi and ask for her commitment to oppose the domestic gag rule. You can say, “I’m calling to express my concern that lawmakers are lobbying the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to adopt a domestic gag rule around Title X. The domestic gag rule would withhold funds from ANY health care provider unless they agree to never mention the word “abortion” — putting the health care of the four million people at risk. I’m asking the Congresswoman to commit to opposing any and all attempts to pass a domestic gag rule around the Title X family planning program.”

Senate Republicans’ unconstitutional attack on bodily autonomy

Senate Republicans forced a vote on a 20-week abortion ban.

My friends, this one is very personal. I’ve been lucky enough to carry two children to term, through uncomplicated pregnancies. I cherished my unborn daughters. At the same time, those experiences convinced me as nothing else has ever done, that a pregnant person must be entitled to terminate their pregnancy, as an inviolable principle of bodily autonomy.

Pregnant people risk their peace of mind, their health, and even their lives, to bear children. No one should ever be forced to do so against their will.

We can disagree about many things. We cannot agree to violate a person’s right to their own body. As the Supreme Court has clearly ruled, to do so is unconstitutional.

In January, Dianne Feinstein said: “I remember what it was like before Roe v. Wade. I know the lengths women took so they could make their own decisions regarding their health and their destiny. I know all too well just how dangerous it was before Roe v. Wade, and I’ll continue to fight to protect a woman’s hard-fought right to control her own body.”

Kamala Harris also opposed the ban. Please call our Senators and thank them for standing up for women. Please ask them to urge their Republican colleagues to do the same.
