Hundreds of children remain separated

Tomorrow marks four weeks since the deadline to reunite families separated at the border by the Trump administration. Yet when we spoke with June Williams at Senator Harris’ office last week, she told us that 539 children still needed to be reunited. Every day, the government is defying the courts.

For perhaps 366 of these children, reunification will be even more difficult. The administration has deported their parents, with no plans to stay in touch to give their children back.

Trump’s cruel and inhumane policy has traumatized and effectively orphaned these innocents. This humanitarian disaster is ongoing.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

We don’t often ask you to donate, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Here are three organizations we believe to be doing essential work in assisting separated families. These children are suffering. Please give what you can.

  • The Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project is the only organization in Arizona that provides free legal and social services to detained men, women, and children under threat of deportation.
  • Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue Committee is mobilizing to provide asylum-seeking families who have been released from immigration custody with critical aid.
  • RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees in Texas.

What gives me hope this Independence Day

Today marks two months since I took my naturalization oath. A common wisecrack from my American friends was: Why? A lot of people see Australia as somewhere to escape to.

But that’s not my Australia. Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette and the podcast The Teacher’s Pet tell a different story, of a society where women were considered lesser, and where difference was punished with violence. That is my story.

I say this not to sadden you, but to strengthen your resolve. The darkness and the smug, bullying hypocrisy that surround us aren’t new. They are so familiar, they’re boring.

Nor are they uniquely American. They’re the malignancy that white women and people of color and poor, disabled and LGBTQIA folks all over the world have faced and fought, our entire lives.

What’s new is that our stories are being told. What’s new is righteous anger, and community. Tens of thousands of people in the streets, marching for refugee children. That gives me hope. You give me hope.

Don’t get mad. Get organized

I’m not going to lie to you. Between the awful SCOTUS decisions on fake health centersgerrymanderingthe Muslim ban and unions, and the resignation of Justice Kennedy, it’s been an exhausting, depressing week.

If you feel terrible right now, it’s because you care about other people. I’m proud of you.

In the dark days after the 2016 election, the only thing that could cheer me up was resistance. It’s still true. Let’s turn this grief into action.

Start small. Hold Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to his own standards. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut said it best:

Here it is, plain and simple. McConnell set the rule. Now, he and Senate Republicans need to follow it. No vote on a Supreme Court nominee until after the new Congress is seated.

Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein were quick to add their voices. Now add yours.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris. Thank them for being so ready to insist on the McConnell rule. Ask them to use their influence to hold Democratic Senators together on this matter.

If you don’t want to call, use ResistBot.

Trump’s order solves nothing. We march

Don’t be fooled by the president’s bullying tactics. Today’s executive order does nothing to address his administration’s inhumanity. Trump abused immigrants from the very beginning. He attacked our DREAMers and our Muslim neighbors.

Then, in April, Jeff Sessions announced a “zero-tolerance” policy. He now prosecutes everyone crossing our Southern border undocumented. It is not illegal to seek asylum. Yet thousands of children have been ripped away from their parents and imprisoned.

Trump claims his executive order will end family separations. But it will not reunite the lost children with their families. Nor does it address the racist, cruel policies that brought us here. Families will be detained indefinitely.

It has come to this: little children in prison camps. We must act.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

It’s time to take to the streets. Two actions are planned for San Francisco:

  • On Saturday, June 23, join the #familiesbelongtogether rally at 10am at Justin Herman Plaza/Embarcardero SF.
  • On Saturday, June 30, meet IndivisibleSF, Moveon.org, the Women’s March and many others in Mission Dolores Park at 10am to march to Civic Center at 11.

Keep calling your MOCs. Tell them to vote No on bad immigration bills. Sean Elsbernd of Dianne Feinstein’s office reminds us that the Senator uses our voices to make her case in Washington. If you can’t call, try Resistbot.

RECENT ACTIONS

STAND UP SAN FRANCISCO GET OUT THE VOTE

We need more votes in Congress. We will be phone banking to get out the vote in November. Kathleen Murray has graciously agreed to lead our efforts. If you’re willing to open your house to SUSF members for two hours of phone banking, please let Kathleen know.

“I don’t know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country”

“Any parents here, mother or father, knows that this is barbaric. This is not what America is. But this is the policy of the Trump administration. I just don’t even know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country. And maybe there will be, when people realize that this is a policy that they defend.”
Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

Our representatives are justifiably outraged at the separation of children from their parents at the border. Rallies demanding that #FamiliesBelongTogether have in fact been taking place all over the country, but what Congresswoman Pelosi’s comments suggest that we need to be a LOT louder on this issue.

We cannot allow our government to imprison children for any reason. We cannot allow people of color to be held in indefinite detention. We must take action.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Congresswoman Pelosi and ask her to co-sponsor H.R.5950, the HELP Separated Children Act, which strengthens protections for immigrant families while they are in ICE custody. There’s a script you can use at the bottom of this page (you can also use Resistbot).

Extra credit: Help separated families now. Donate to RAICES, a nonprofit legal agency that works with underserved immigrants, to raise the money needed to post bond and reunite these children with their families. Then sign up for action updates from Families Belong Together, so you can be alerted the next time there’s a rally.

She’ll be contacting you soon about our first Stand Up SF phone bank. Meanwhile, we are strongly encouraging every one of you to attend Democracy Action’s phone- and text-banking events.
