Our representatives are justifiably outraged at the separation of children from their parents at the border. Rallies demanding that #FamiliesBelongTogether have in fact been taking place all over the country, but what Congresswoman Pelosi’s comments suggest that we need to be a LOT louder on this issue.

We cannot allow our government to imprison children for any reason. We cannot allow people of color to be held in indefinite detention. We must take action.

Call Congresswoman Pelosi and ask her to co-sponsor H.R.5950, the HELP Separated Children Act, which strengthens protections for immigrant families while they are in ICE custody. There’s a script you can use at the bottom of this page (you can also use Resistbot).

Extra credit: Help separated families now. Donate to RAICES, a nonprofit legal agency that works with underserved immigrants, to raise the money needed to post bond and reunite these children with their families. Then sign up for action updates from Families Belong Together, so you can be alerted the next time there’s a rally.

Get kids out of prison camps

There are children in jail in Texas for the crime of being brown. MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff visited a “shelter” for detained child migrants today. “This place is called a shelter but these kids are incarcerated,” he said.

These children are taken from their parents by force. After losing his son in the McAllen, Texas processing center, Marco Antonio Muñoz killed himself. On Saturday, Rep Pramila Jayapal visited 170 women in prison in Seattle:

Some of them said they could hear their children screaming for them in the next room. The children ranged anywhere from one to teenagers.

The facilities are at capacity. Now the administration wants to build prison camps, for children.

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris. Thank them for supporting the Immigrant Family Separation Bill. Ask them to get these children out of prison.

Insist that Congress keep its promises

“…walking away from the JCPOA risks losing a deal that accomplishes – with Iran – the very outcome that we are pursuing with the North Koreans.”

President Obama was among the first to denounce the administration’s latest reckless act. He won’t be the last. Today, France, Germany and the UK said they regret the president’s decision. They will carry on without the USA.

Iran did not violate the agreement. The USA did. Withdrawing from the JCPOA isolates us from our allies. It further destabilizes the volatile Middle East. It weakens our international diplomacy, maybe fatally. If we cannot uphold our own commitments, why would any country come to the negotiating table?

The JCPOA is not the only promise we ought to keep. Volunteer rescuers the White Helmets have saved thousands of lives in Syria. The USA provides a third of their funding. That funding has been frozen while the State Department conducts an “active review”.

Fight Jeff Sessions’ plan to speed deportations

The DOJ plans to assess the job performance of immigration judges on how quickly they hear cases and how many cases they close. Judges must clear 700 cases per year – almost three a day – to achieve a “satisfactory” rating. Attorney General and white supremacist Jeff Sessions has admitted that the aim is to speed deportation.

As the National Association of Immigration Judges points out, quotas will undermine judicial independence and erode due process. Our immigrant brothers and sisters aren’t just numbers. They are not a backlog to be cleared. They are people.

Our Members of Congress and their staff members aren’t necessarily familiar with these new rules. Let’s make sure they know where we stand.

Honor the real Dr. King

Letter from Birmingham Jail

Tomorrow, we struggle to honor Martin Luther King, an American hero. While for many white people, this takes the form of a three-day weekend and clearance sales, still others misremember the man as little more than a gentle preacher who “had a dream”, known for nonviolent protests and beloved by all. It’s time to explode that comfortable myth.

Dr. King was a radical. He was an outspoken critic of the undermining of Black resistance by well-meaning white people, of American imperialism, of capitalism, and of war. When you read Letter from Birmingham Jail, you see a man who is tired of waiting for white supremacy to discover its foundational error, who will struggle on toward truth at the cost of popular approval. Martin Luther King wasn’t popular, and his willingness to challenge power and privilege cost him his life.

The struggle endures. The GOP continues to suppress the votes of people of color, to prevent free and fair elections (the only way they can win). As we gear up for this year’s crucial elections, let’s take inspiration from King’s resistance. Let’s fight back, in King’s name as well as our own.
