Stop the killing

We have a great opportunity now to hold police officers acountable for planting evidence, sexually assaulting, or killing members of the public. We are closer than ever to lifting the veil of police secrecy with Senate Bill 1421. This bill would give the public access to records of police misconduct, including use of deadly force, and it’s up for a vote in the California Assembly this week.

In addition, the Assembly will vote on AB 931, which updates California police’s deadly use of force standard. Under AB 931, police would only be allowed to use deadly force if there were no reasonable alternatives available and if there was an imminent threat to the officer or another person’s safety.

For decades, our communities, especially communities of color, have demanded accountability for police violence. We have the chance to make a real difference by acting now.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Assemblymembers David Chiu and Phil Ting and tell them to support AB 1421 and AB 931 (call scripts).

The GOP’s shell game: immigrants vs. Medicare

Because there are no tactics so abhorrent that Republicans won’t stoop to them, while we are breaking our hearts over their inhumane treatment of immigrants, they are trying to ram through a budget that would cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. The so-called “A Brighter American Future” budget (can you believe it?) also threatens the Affordable Care Act.

Meanwhile, Trump’s recent executive order will result in mass and indefinite detention of families at the border. The U.S. Navy is already mobilizing to build massive tent cities to imprison immigrants, including here in the Bay Area.

The GOP thinks we can’t pay attention to more than one thing at a time. Show them they’re wrong.

TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three MoCs right now and say, I am totally opposed to any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and I urge [MoC] to reject the new Trump Budget. You can also use Resistbot.

While you’re on the phone, thank your MoCs for supporting the Keep Families Together Act (script here).

Extra credit: Call Governor Brown at (916) 445-2841 and tell him to withdraw the California National Guard from the border (script).

Trump’s order solves nothing. We march

Don’t be fooled by the president’s bullying tactics. Today’s executive order does nothing to address his administration’s inhumanity. Trump abused immigrants from the very beginning. He attacked our DREAMers and our Muslim neighbors.

Then, in April, Jeff Sessions announced a “zero-tolerance” policy. He now prosecutes everyone crossing our Southern border undocumented. It is not illegal to seek asylum. Yet thousands of children have been ripped away from their parents and imprisoned.

Trump claims his executive order will end family separations. But it will not reunite the lost children with their families. Nor does it address the racist, cruel policies that brought us here. Families will be detained indefinitely.

It has come to this: little children in prison camps. We must act.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

It’s time to take to the streets. Two actions are planned for San Francisco:

  • On Saturday, June 23, join the #familiesbelongtogether rally at 10am at Justin Herman Plaza/Embarcardero SF.
  • On Saturday, June 30, meet IndivisibleSF, Moveon.org, the Women’s March and many others in Mission Dolores Park at 10am to march to Civic Center at 11.

Keep calling your MOCs. Tell them to vote No on bad immigration bills. Sean Elsbernd of Dianne Feinstein’s office reminds us that the Senator uses our voices to make her case in Washington. If you can’t call, try Resistbot.

“I don’t know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country”

“Any parents here, mother or father, knows that this is barbaric. This is not what America is. But this is the policy of the Trump administration. I just don’t even know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country. And maybe there will be, when people realize that this is a policy that they defend.”
Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

Our representatives are justifiably outraged at the separation of children from their parents at the border. Rallies demanding that #FamiliesBelongTogether have in fact been taking place all over the country, but what Congresswoman Pelosi’s comments suggest that we need to be a LOT louder on this issue.

We cannot allow our government to imprison children for any reason. We cannot allow people of color to be held in indefinite detention. We must take action.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Congresswoman Pelosi and ask her to co-sponsor H.R.5950, the HELP Separated Children Act, which strengthens protections for immigrant families while they are in ICE custody. There’s a script you can use at the bottom of this page (you can also use Resistbot).

Extra credit: Help separated families now. Donate to RAICES, a nonprofit legal agency that works with underserved immigrants, to raise the money needed to post bond and reunite these children with their families. Then sign up for action updates from Families Belong Together, so you can be alerted the next time there’s a rally.

Get kids out of prison camps

There are children in jail in Texas for the crime of being brown. MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff visited a “shelter” for detained child migrants today. “This place is called a shelter but these kids are incarcerated,” he said.

These children are taken from their parents by force. After losing his son in the McAllen, Texas processing center, Marco Antonio Muñoz killed himself. On Saturday, Rep Pramila Jayapal visited 170 women in prison in Seattle:

Some of them said they could hear their children screaming for them in the next room. The children ranged anywhere from one to teenagers.

The facilities are at capacity. Now the administration wants to build prison camps, for children.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris. Thank them for supporting the Immigrant Family Separation Bill. Ask them to get these children out of prison.

STAND UP SAN FRANCISCO GET OUT THE VOTE
