Every one of us counts.

Let’s start today with a piece of hopeful news that you might have missed. An election in Wisconsin this week for a seat on the state Supreme Court was won handily by a circuit court judge named Rebecca Dallet, in the face of the efforts of Republican Governor Scott Walker and the whole GOP establishment.

Why is this notable? Because this was the first time in 23 years that a liberal candidate who wasn’t an incumbent won a seat on the state’s high court. As GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell admitted today about Republican prospects in November’s midterms: “We know the wind is going to be in our face. We don’t know whether it’s going to be a Category 3, 4 or 5.”

Let’s make it a 5.

A FAIR COUNT FOR A FAIR COUNTRY

The U.S. Census can seem like a fairly uncontroversial topic — until you realize that the count of who’s present in America is used to determine congressional apportionment for the next decade, allocate federal funding for infrastructure, and serve as the basis for huge amounts of American research. And right now, the Trump administration is working to game the 2020 census to suppress the votes and voices of their constituents — even changing the process in attempts to undercount immigrants and minorities and avoid counting LGBTQ people entirely.

The census determines for the next ten years who we are and how our voices count.

WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and voice your support for his decision to sue the Trump Administration over the plan to add a citizenship question to U.S. census-taking.

Call Senator Harris and thank her for co-sponsoring Senate bill S.2580: The Every Person Counts Act, which would remove the citizenship question from the census.

Call Senator Feinstein and ask her to co-sponsor Senate bill S.2580.

Call Nancy Pelosi and ask her to support a similar bill in the House of Representatives.

Thank Rep Schiff for speaking truth to power

MINORITY MEMO DEMONSTRATES FBI, DOJ ACTED LEGALLY

The Schiff memo is out, and makes it clear – as if there were any doubt – that the Nunes memo was crafted by Nunes and Trump to attack and discredit the FBI and DOJ. It’s also painfully clear that in the summer and fall of 2016, even as it was covertly investigating the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, the FBI was leaking and breaching protocol in ways that undermined Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

If there’s good news in the Schiff memo, it is that the FBI and DOJ have acted legally, professionally and with honor in their investigation into Trump’s Russian ties. Tweet your thanks to Adam Schiff for setting the record straight.

DREAMERS NEED IMMEDIATE RELIEF

On March 5, Trump’s cruel DACA cliff will take effect. Every day, 1,200 DACA recipients will lose their protections. Call, write or text Senators Feinstein and Harris and remind them that our Dreamers are our sisters and brothers, not bargaining chips. We cannot trust the Trump administration to negotiate in good faith. We need a clean DREAM Act.

MARCH FOR OUR LIVES

Support the courageous work of the survivors of the Parkland, Florida school massacre. Even as they mourn their murdered friends, they’re organizing the March for Our Lives – nationwide, co-ordinated protests calling for better gun regulation, planned for Saturday, March 24. Sign up for San Francisco’s event here.

This is a really big deal

On Friday, Trump took another major step to delegitimize the Russia investigation.

Having created an artificial controversy around the supposedly scandalous Nunes memo, which alleges that the FBI abused its surveillance authority, Trump then released it, to a collective “meh” from observers. There’s no evidence to suggest either that the FBI acted unlawfully or improperly in collecting information about Trump and Russia.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), has a memo of his own that he wants released, which fact-checks the Nunes memo. The entire House Committee, including Republicans, voted to release that memo, but on Friday, Trump blocked its release. Trump doesn’t want people to know the truth: that there’s nothing improper about Mueller’s investigation. Senator Feinstein and Congresswoman Pelosi have already called him out for it.

Let’s put it bluntly: Trump is obstructing justice. This is an impeachable offense, and we need to get loud about it.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Congresswoman Pelosi right now and tell her to read the Schiff memo on the House floor. You can say, “My name is [NAME] calling from San Francisco, and I think that Congresswoman Pelosi should read the Schiff memo into the congressional record. The Constitution protects her from liability in sharing that information, even if it’s classified. We need to have that context in order to counter the misinformation of the Nunes memo, and we constituents will back her up on this.”

At our January meeting, we had a substantive and thoughtful discussion about whether Stand Up SF should endorse candidates in the upcoming elections. At our February meeting, we will conduct our Go/No-go vote. If you feel strongly about endorsements, either way, come and vote! If you can’t make the meeting, email your proxy vote to Paul, Rachel, or me.

Don’t let them undermine our democracy

Last night, Trump used the State of the Union address as an opportunity to spread racist dogma and lies. He also asked Congress to end the rule of law.

This is consistent with his behavior and that of the GOP over the past few weeks, as they seek to de-legitimize the Mueller investigation into Russian interference in our government. We know that Trump has tried to fire Mueller once already. This week, he unilaterally decided not to enforce sanctions against Russia that Congress had approved.

All of this is a disaster for democracy. Trump and his administration are whittling away the norms and laws that hold our government accountable to the people — to us. Make no mistake: this is a crisis. Our representatives need to hear from each and every one of us.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three MoCs and tell them you are worried about the administration undermining the Russia investigation. Tell them to co-sponsor and support the proposed bipartisan legislation that would protect Mueller and the investigation. (script at the bottom of the page)

Call Senator Feinstein and thank her for demanding that Trump follow the law and impose sanctions against Russia. You can say “I want Senator Feinstein to know that I appreciate her holding Trump accountable on Russian sanctions, and I am looking to her to defend the rule of law.”

Sign up to attend a massive protest if Trump fires Mueller
