This is a fight we can win.

Trump announces his Supreme Court nominee tomorrow. It doesn’t matter who it is, they will be terrible: committed to overturning Roe v. Wade and attacking the Affordable Care Act, voting rights, environmental protections, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Indivisible is fighting this nomination nationwide alongside many other civil rights groups. This is going to be a hard one to win: we need to get 51 senators (including two Republicans) to refuse to confirm any nominee. But we can win. It will require massive, sustained, collective action.

I’m proud to say our action at Sen. Harris’ office this week is fully booked, and we will be speaking out in coalition with members of NARAL to drive home the importance of this fight. But there’s a call we still need to make.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senator Feinstein and ask what she is doing to make sure Democratic senators refuse Trump’s nominees, and how she is securing Republican votes.

What gives me hope this Independence Day

Today marks two months since I took my naturalization oath. A common wisecrack from my American friends was: Why? A lot of people see Australia as somewhere to escape to.

But that’s not my Australia. Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette and the podcast The Teacher’s Pet tell a different story, of a society where women were considered lesser, and where difference was punished with violence. That is my story.

I say this not to sadden you, but to strengthen your resolve. The darkness and the smug, bullying hypocrisy that surround us aren’t new. They are so familiar, they’re boring.

Nor are they uniquely American. They’re the malignancy that white women and people of color and poor, disabled and LGBTQIA folks all over the world have faced and fought, our entire lives.

What’s new is that our stories are being told. What’s new is righteous anger, and community. Tens of thousands of people in the streets, marching for refugee children. That gives me hope. You give me hope.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Yes, the news is terrible. Let that motivate you. Turn bad news into action. If you haven’t already, sign up for Jen Hofmann’s Americans of Conscience Checklist. Jen is a wise, kind writer, and since the election, her messages have been a regular ray of light.

Thank you for everything you do.

Rachel

You can defeat Roy Moore

Hey, you. Yes, you, blue-stater. Do you want to keep a pedophile out of the Senate? Do you want to put a Democrat into a historically Republican Senate seat, to help us win close votes on critical nominations and issues like health care and tax bills?

Do you want to stop Roy Moore, a serial harasser and assaulter of teenage girls, and proponent of slavery and of outlawing homosexuality, from becoming Alabama’s next senator?

You can help Democrat Doug Jones win that Senate seat. You just need two spare hours, a comfy chair, and a computer. You don’t have to pick up the phone. You just have to send a few texts.

Election day in Alabama is this Tuesday, and the race, incredibly, is too close to call. We have TWO DAYS to make a difference!

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Get out the vote. Sign up for a shift at Indivisible’s text-bank for Doug Jones today, tomorrow, or Tuesday, anytime from 7am to 7pm.

NEWS

You might have noticed you haven’t seen an email from Phyllis in a while. She’s had to step away from Stand Up San Francisco for personal reasons, for an indefinite time. We are looking forward to reconnecting with her at the holiday party.

I am thrilled to announce that Rachel has joined our leadership team as of this week, and she will be working with Paul and me to steer Stand Up SF. She has a lot of great ideas about our work on the 2018 elections and we’re thrilled to have her aboard. She will be contributing as a member of our Policy Team as well. Please join me in welcoming Rachel to leadership!

We are continuing to recruit great leaders like Rachel! If you or someone you know has energy to give to Stand Up SF, check out the opportunities on our volunteer page. Want to do something but don’t see it listed? Just drop us a line.
