Cut off Putin’s puppet

The president disgraced himself again in Helsinki. He rejected the findings of our intelligence community that Russia attacked the 2016 election and determined its outcome. He praised Russian president and former KGB agent Vladimir Putin at the expense of our NATO allies.

He looked every inch Putin’s puppet.

His performance was so disastrous, even his loyal lapdogs Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan were forced to condemn it.

Of course Trump has tried to walk back what he said. His explanation is this: “In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word would instead of wouldn’t.”

Would you believe that? I wouldn’t.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

We don’t often ask you to take to the streets. We call our work “activism for introverts”. But desperate times call for desperate measures. The United States has hit a new low.

In 2016, mass protests in South Korea brought down a corrupt president. Now it’s our turn.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday 7/18, from 8:30pm, Indivisible SF is hosting a candlelight vigil at the Powell Street Cable Car Turnaround to confront corruption and demand democracy.

Bring a sign, a votive candle, or a friend. More details here. I’ll see you there.

Don’t get mad. Get organized

I’m not going to lie to you. Between the awful SCOTUS decisions on fake health centersgerrymanderingthe Muslim ban and unions, and the resignation of Justice Kennedy, it’s been an exhausting, depressing week.

If you feel terrible right now, it’s because you care about other people. I’m proud of you.

In the dark days after the 2016 election, the only thing that could cheer me up was resistance. It’s still true. Let’s turn this grief into action.

Start small. Hold Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to his own standards. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut said it best:

Here it is, plain and simple. McConnell set the rule. Now, he and Senate Republicans need to follow it. No vote on a Supreme Court nominee until after the new Congress is seated.

Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein were quick to add their voices. Now add yours.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris. Thank them for being so ready to insist on the McConnell rule. Ask them to use their influence to hold Democratic Senators together on this matter.

If you don’t want to call, use ResistBot.

Following in Nixon’s footsteps

Did you see it? In a secret memo to special counsel Mueller released yesterday, the President argued that it’s impossible for him to obstruct justice, because he is the President.

Maybe you remember hearing something like this before?

“When the president does it, that means it is not illegal.
— Richard Nixon

Trump clearly believes the law does not apply to him. This assertion is clearly intended to protect him from being accused of any crime, perhaps even to establish a precedent of immunity for sitting presidents. This is bigger than firing Mueller or Rosenstein. It suggests that Trump can get away with any crime. It should be terrifying to anyone who believes in democracy.

And yet all three of our MoCs have been silent on this story so far. They need to make public statements, immediately, to condemn this shameful assertion of limitless power.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris, and Congresswoman Pelosi, and tell them to state their disapproval. You can say, Hi, I’m [NAME] calling from San Francisco, and I wanted to tell the [Senator/Congresswoman] that I am appalled by the memo revealing that Trump believes he can break the law with impunity. The assertion that the President has unlimited power over criminal justice is dangerous to our democracy. I am asking the [Senator/Congresswoman] to make a public statement as soon as possible that condemns this tyrannical idea.”

Act now to protect the rule of law

The Department of Justice is not going to be extorted. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein made headlines yesterday with his defiant response to private and public threats made against him.

Rosenstein – a Trump appointee! – is under attack because he supervises Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia. If Rosenstein can insist on the rule of law in the face of Republican attacks, so can we.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Sign up for Mueller Firing Rapid Response to be notified if the administration acts against Rosenstein or Mueller. We the people will take to the streets in a rally to insist that Nobody is Above the Law.

Rallies require organizers. Volunteers for MoveOn and Indivisible SF’s Rapid Response event will patrol the event in buddy pairs to keep things organized. If you’re willing to help keep the rally safe and effective, fill out this form to volunteer.

Lives are more important than guns.

Our monthly meeting today featured a conversation with Ellen Ginsberg from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. We discussed the current state of gun legislation in America, and Ellen updated us on where we can best focus our activist energies to stop the scourge of American gun violence, notably by opposing the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Actand supporting legislation requiring universal background checks (supported by over 90% of Americans).

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

The National Rifle Association has for decades been an overtly political lobbying organization, buying their influence over politicians to promote the maximum profit on gun sales while jeopardizing dozens of lives every day due to gun violence.

As such, the NRA has no reasonable claim as a “tax-exempt social welfare organization.” So help strip them of this designation and hit the NRA where it lives: its pocketbook.

Revoke the NRA’s 501c4 Tax Exemption

File the IRS Complaint about the NRA

And while you’re at it, call Senators Feinstein and Harris and Leader Pelosi and thank them for supporting universal background checks for gun purchases.
