Cut off Putin’s puppet

The president disgraced himself again in Helsinki. He rejected the findings of our intelligence community that Russia attacked the 2016 election and determined its outcome. He praised Russian president and former KGB agent Vladimir Putin at the expense of our NATO allies.

He looked every inch Putin’s puppet.

His performance was so disastrous, even his loyal lapdogs Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan were forced to condemn it.

Of course Trump has tried to walk back what he said. His explanation is this: “In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word would instead of wouldn’t.”

Would you believe that? I wouldn’t.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

We don’t often ask you to take to the streets. We call our work “activism for introverts”. But desperate times call for desperate measures. The United States has hit a new low.

In 2016, mass protests in South Korea brought down a corrupt president. Now it’s our turn.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday 7/18, from 8:30pm, Indivisible SF is hosting a candlelight vigil at the Powell Street Cable Car Turnaround to confront corruption and demand democracy.

Bring a sign, a votive candle, or a friend. More details here. I’ll see you there.

Insist that Congress keep its promises

“…walking away from the JCPOA risks losing a deal that accomplishes – with Iran – the very outcome that we are pursuing with the North Koreans.”

President Obama was among the first to denounce the administration’s latest reckless act. He won’t be the last. Today, France, Germany and the UK said they regret the president’s decision. They will carry on without the USA.

Iran did not violate the agreement. The USA did. Withdrawing from the JCPOA isolates us from our allies. It further destabilizes the volatile Middle East. It weakens our international diplomacy, maybe fatally. If we cannot uphold our own commitments, why would any country come to the negotiating table?

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

The JCPOA is not the only promise we ought to keep. Volunteer rescuers the White Helmets have saved thousands of lives in Syria. The USA provides a third of their funding. That funding has been frozen while the State Department conducts an “active review”.

Call all three MOCs and ask them to restore funding to the White Helmets. Not comfortable making phone calls? Try Resistbot. And if you have a few dollars to spare, you can donate directly.

Stop Trump’s War Cabinet

In less than two weeks, Congress will evaluate whether to allow a war criminal to head up the CIA.

Gina Haspel tortured people and destroyed the evidence, yet the CIA is trying to clean up her record and rally behind her nomination.

The fact that Haspel personally committed war crimes is enough to oppose her nomination. But she also tried to cover up the evidence by ensuring videotapes of the torture sessions were destroyed. There is no justification for her to become the head of the CIA.

Unbelievably, neither of our senators has committed to vote against this torturer. Senator Feinstein has expressed concerns but has not committed, and Senator Harris is still equivocating. It is unconscionable for Democrats to support a torturer for any role in government. Tell them how you feel.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call both senators, using the call script tools and script here, and demand that they commit to opposing Haspel.

Extra credit: Watch and share this video about Haspel’s war crimes using the hashtag #BlockHaspel.

Attack on Syria: action you can take right now

The use of chemical weapons in Syria is an atrocity. But Trump’s missiles make the situation much worse. He is acting outside the Constitution, which requires Congressional approval for acts of war. He is harming the very civilians he claims to want to help. And he is further destabilizing an already frighteningly volatile region.

Congress must insist on its sole authority over military force. Our members of Congress must denounce these attacks. They must challenge the president’s refusal to accept Syrian refugees. They must call on the administration to work with international partners for a political and diplomatic resolution to the fighting in Syria.

ONE ACTION YOU CAN TAKE RIGHT NOW

Call (or use ResistBot) to ask all three of our MOCs to stand against these reckless and unconstitutional acts of war. IndivisibleHQ has published this call script and tool.

Call and keep calling. The world needs our resistance, now more than ever.

Sen. Feinstein MUST do the right thing

In January 2017, Senator Feinstein infuriated many of us in the resistance by voting to confirm Mike Pompeo as CIA Director. At that time, we pointed out that Pompeo is a supporter of torture and a war hawk, and we let her know that we were bitterly disappointed in her vote.

Now, due to Trump’s inability to retain his cabinet, Pompeo has been nominated as Secretary of State, with confirmation hearings beginning this week. And although she took plenty of heat from us last year, we don’t know how Senator Feinstein will vote.

If confirmed, Mike Pompeo would bring the #TrumpThreatLevel to a new high. He is a warmonger, a climate change denier, and an Islamophobe. If he were to become the face of U.S. foreign policy, he would export Trumpism across the globe, making us all less safe. You can help stop this. If we can get Democrats to stay strong, and vote against Pompeo, we can stop Pompeo from becoming our nation’s top diplomat. Call Senator Feinstein this week and tell her that she must say no to Pompeo!

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Use this script to call Senator Feinstein and tell her she must vote against Pompeo as Secretary of State.

Have another two minutes? We don’t know how Senator Harris will vote either. Call her and tell her to vote no on Pompeo as well.
