This is a fight we can win.

Trump announces his Supreme Court nominee tomorrow. It doesn’t matter who it is, they will be terrible: committed to overturning Roe v. Wade and attacking the Affordable Care Act, voting rights, environmental protections, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Indivisible is fighting this nomination nationwide alongside many other civil rights groups. This is going to be a hard one to win: we need to get 51 senators (including two Republicans) to refuse to confirm any nominee. But we can win. It will require massive, sustained, collective action.

I’m proud to say our action at Sen. Harris’ office this week is fully booked, and we will be speaking out in coalition with members of NARAL to drive home the importance of this fight. But there’s a call we still need to make.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senator Feinstein and ask what she is doing to make sure Democratic senators refuse Trump’s nominees, and how she is securing Republican votes.

The GOP’s shell game: immigrants vs. Medicare

Because there are no tactics so abhorrent that Republicans won’t stoop to them, while we are breaking our hearts over their inhumane treatment of immigrants, they are trying to ram through a budget that would cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. The so-called “A Brighter American Future” budget (can you believe it?) also threatens the Affordable Care Act.

Meanwhile, Trump’s recent executive order will result in mass and indefinite detention of families at the border. The U.S. Navy is already mobilizing to build massive tent cities to imprison immigrants, including here in the Bay Area.

The GOP thinks we can’t pay attention to more than one thing at a time. Show them they’re wrong.

TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three MoCs right now and say, I am totally opposed to any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and I urge [MoC] to reject the new Trump Budget. You can also use Resistbot.

While you’re on the phone, thank your MoCs for supporting the Keep Families Together Act (script here).

Extra credit: Call Governor Brown at (916) 445-2841 and tell him to withdraw the California National Guard from the border (script).

Replace Paul Ryan with a better human being

House Speaker Paul Ryan won’t seek re-election in 2018.

History will be no kinder to him than Ryan himself has been to American’s most vulnerable people. As a legislator, he was cruel in principle, and ineffective in practice. He’ll be remembered for his failures to take health care and social security away from poor people, and for his passage of a tax bill so regressive that it will propel the federal deficit to over $1 trillion.

Ryan claims he is retiring at 48 in order to spend more time with his family. In fact, he faced a tough re-election battle against Randy “@IronStache” Bryce, an Army veteran and union worker who outraised the Speaker by $1.75m in the first three months of 2018.

Even with Ryan out of the race, Bryce’s victory is no foregone conclusion. Remember the death of Antonin Scalia, and how it led, via Mitch McConnell’s professional misconduct, to the appointment of Neil Gorsuch. The Republican party has a deep bench of cruel and unprincipled people. We cannot afford to be complacent.

A glimpse of a better future

Yes, it really happened. Doug Jones, who prosecuted Ku Klux Klan domestic terrorists, defeated credibly-accused child molester Roy Moore to take Jeff Sessions’ Alabama Senate seat away from the GOP.A

It just got a whole lot harder for Republicans to legislate Trump’s destructive agenda.

This spectacular Twitter thread from progressive journalist Al Giordano describes how Jones won: old-fashioned feet on the street. The NAACP and Black churches mobilized to get out the vote. The same winning strategy created the blue wave in Virginia last month.

If we can win in Alabama, we can win anywhere. And we must. Progressive Americans spent 2017 in a holding pattern. We kept up the pressure on our Members of Congress. We resisted successive attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. We haven’t retreated, but we can’t advance.

To move forward, we need more votes in the Senate and the House. We need Senate wins in Nevada and Arizona. We need House seats everywhere.

That’s why I’m delighted to join Laura and Paul on the leadership team of Stand Up SF. It’s also why I’m committing to working with SwingLeft to defeat Jeff Dunham in CA District 10 in 2018.

You can sign up for SwingLeft here. Let’s make last night’s victory the first of many.

Thanks for everything you do.

Crucial events this week

It’s recess week, and that means our representatives are at home where they can hear you in person. It’s all hands on deck to stop TrumpCare AGAIN, this time as part of the #TrumpTaxScam. And have you heard? The GOP have sneaked anti-choice “personhood” language into the bill! This week, raise your voice to demand that our representatives do everything in their power to stop it.

TODAY at noon: Join Stand Up SF members at Congresswoman Pelosi’s office to thank her for her ongoing defense of the Affordable Care Act (now once again at risk), and talk strategy for winning back the House in 2018. SIGN UP NOW!

TOMORROW at noon: Come out for an all-Indivisibles protest in front of Senator Feinstein’s office to stop the tax scam and ACA sabotage. Tell Senator Feinstein she must withhold consent to proceed on this bill. Learn more and sign up.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call both senators and demand that the “personhood” language be removed from the tax bill. (call tool and script)

Not comfortable making phone calls? Try Resistbot, and send a fax to both Senators in under 2 minutes!
