Tell Pelosi it’s time for reparations

With dire conditions at the border and a President richly deserving impeachment hearings, it’s hard to focus on larger issues. And yet we must. The House is currently considering H.R.40., a bill that would launch a commission to study the most effective way to pay reparations to African-Americans for the ongoing damage inflicted by racist federal policies.

The median wealth of black families is less than a tenth of that of white families. More than a quarter of black families have zero or negative net worth. This racial wealth gap was driven by federal government policies like slavery, red-lining to create discriminatory housing conditions, designing interstate highways to destroy inner-city black neighborhoods, and underfunding predominantly black schools.

The commission proposed by H.R.40 would evaluate the government’s liability and propose financial solutions. In doing so it would begin to address America’s unacknowledged debt to its black citizens.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Nancy Pelosi and ask her to support H.R. 40 to help our nation address its history and current reality of racially discriminatory federal policies. If you’re shy on the phone, don’t forget that using Resistbot is just as effective as making a call.

ICE raids began today

Right now Congress is putting the finishing touches on appropriations. This process determines next year’s funding for federal agencies, including ICE and the Customs and Border Patrol. The first draft is better than it was, but that isn’t saying much. The bill includes $400m for ICE to spend as it pleases, on detaining innocent asylum-seekers in inhumane conditions.

It gets worse. We’re hearing that Trump’s ICE raids began today. If you’re angry about concentration camps, family separations and mass deportations, you should be. The best way to fight back is to defund the agencies responsible.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three MOCs and use this Indivisible script:

I’m calling to ask [MoC] to Defund Hate in this year’s budget by cutting funding for ICE and CBP in the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill, and by getting rid of the slush fund in that bill that will allow ICE to continue terrorizing immigrant communities.

It’s up to us to close the camps

Members of Congress visited the concentration camps on our southern border this week, and their accounts confirmed our worst fearsAsylum-seekers are in overcrowded prison cells, forced to drink from toilets. Customs and Border Patrol officers were openly mocking the representatives, even as news broke of their racist, genocidal private Facebook group.

Since Trump took office, 24 adults have died in the camps. That number doesn’t include the children who have died, or those killed by CBP as they try to make their way across the desert in search of a better life.

We owe a debt of gratitude to these MOCs. Thanks also to the protestors – including Stand Up’s own Laura – who shut down Market Street outside Dianne Feinstein’s office as part of demonstrations across the country yesterday. If you missed that protest, there’s another on Friday, beginning at the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library.

Because our own Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi folded under pressure, the Border Supplemental Appropriations Bill has passed. But another large appropriations bill looms. We must keep pushing Pelosi to #defundhate.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Speaker Pelosi and tell her to do better. Indivisible National offers a number of scripts, but this one is a good start:

In the DHS appropriations bill I oppose increasing enforcement and detention funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or any funds that will be used to separate immigrant children from their parents. I support the #DefundHate campaign.

A matter of life and death

If you can, read this Twitter thread on conditions at the border. The situation is appalling. A 6yo from India died trying to cross the border. At least six children have died in ICE custody…that we know of. Conditions are dire. Facilities are severely overcrowded, there’s not enough food, and detainees are held in “human dog pounds” and “iceboxes”, which are exactly what they sound like.

If you’re anything like me, you feared Trump’s agenda would lead to fascism in America. It has. The administration plans to hold immigrant children in military bases, including Fort Sill in Oklahoma, once a Japanese internment camp. Humanitarian oversight, already difficult, would become near-impossible.

More and more people will die. Someone has to act. Someone has to hold Trump and his lackeys to account, and that someone is our own Member of Congress, Nancy Pelosi.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Speaker Pelosi and use this script:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from San Francisco.

I’m outraged and appalled by the reports of abuses of detained immigrants, from massive overcrowding to denial of necessary medical care to children. I urge Rep. Nancy Pelosi to demand a robust investigation of immigration enforcement practices and detention conditions, deny additional funding to ICE, and allocate adequate funding to immigration courts to ensure timely processing of asylum applications.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Mueller has told us what to do

On Wednesday, Robert Mueller announced his resignation in his first public statement in two years. His account was notably at odds with that of Attorney General William Barr. Mueller was at pains to point out that his report did not exonerate Trump: If we had confidence that the President clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so.”

Mueller’s hands were tied. He believed he had no power to indict a sitting president. He believed that the Constitution grants that power only to Congress.

It is time for Congress to act. At the California Democratic Convention this week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi was greeted with cries of “Impeach!” Add your voice to the choir.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Pelosi on (202) 225-4965 or (415) 556-4862 and ask her to vote yes on Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s Impeachment Resolution (H.Res.257)If calling is not your speed, Resistbot is your friend.
