Although it seems forever in Trump-administration-time, the midterms that restored the House to Democratic control were only three short months ago. I hope you’re feeling rested and refreshed, because it’s time to start working on 2020. There’s a lot to do!
- Have you been missing our sunny Saturdays in Tracy? Robin Cole and the rest of the Greater Tracy Dems are already back in harness. Sign up here for the Thank you canvass this Saturday, or clear your weekends in spring for issues canvasses. In June we’ll adopt another weekend day a month, and resurrect the Beast of the Resistance, our trusty carpool van.
- Much as we love our friends in District 10, our ambitions are national. SwingLeft is putting together a Super State strategy to concentrate our efforts where they’ll do the most good. Read all about it here.
ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW
At the same time, the calendar is barreling toward February 15th, the next shutdown showdown. Please call your senators and encourage them to stand strong and support a conference agreement that has no new funding for the wall. And thank them for fighting to ensure that federal contractors receive their back pay as well.
For those of you not comfortable with making phone calls, Resistbot is an excellent option! Your MOC gets your message, and no human interaction is required. It’s a beautiful thing.
A personal message from member Carole:
As a member of Stand Up SF, I’ve been meeting with the offices of Congresswomen Feinstein and Pelosi. To assist them in getting our government re-opened and our country safe, they have asked for personal stories from Californians of how the shutdown has a direct adverse impact. If you or someone you know has lost income, lost work, or lost access to services, please email me your story in two paragraphs, with a photo. (my email is firstname.lastname@example.org)
I will gather up your stories and pass them on to Pelosi and Feinstein’s offices. They will be brought to the House and Senate floor to help underscore the real-world impact of the shutdown and to build consensus for an end to it. Help personalize this damaging standstill.
Please share and pass along to your friends/relatives/contacts/social media webs. Voices from red districts in California–especially the Central Valley–will be particularly helpful to convince Republican members of Congress.
Thank you so much!
[NOTE: Despite the shutdown ending, let’s continue to collect these stories. It remains to be seen whether Trump will try this stunt again if he doesn’t get his way.]
We have a brand new shipment of sturdy tote bags, manufactured ethically in the USA, bearing the Stand Up San Francisco logo. They’ll be great for finding one another at big rallies, or just showing your pride in being an active member of the Resistance! Tote bags will be available at general meetings; pay what you can. Huge thanks to member Laura for design and coordination!
Want to join the Stand Up SF Slack channel? Reply to email@example.com and we’ll get you set up. If you’ve already joined and need some assistance, let us know; we’re happy to give you whatever help you need to get you up to speed!
Want to help register new citizens to vote with Susan P. and Democracy Action? It’s an incredibly rewarding and moving experience. The naturalization ceremony is Wednesday, Feb.13, in Oakland. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, rain-dependent of course!
Mark your calendar… Citizens Climate Lobby will be speaking at our next meeting! They are a non-partisan group of grassroots activists who have been fighting for over a decade to influence climate policy through relationships with their elected officials (sound familiar?).
They’re coming to talk to us about finding consensus at a time when talk of the environment often sparks heated debate. We’ll also find out how we can help in their endeavor, and what methods they’ve found effective in influencing our MOCs and creating change. It should be an interesting discussion. Come join us at the library!
