Scenes of border agents illegally tear-gassing women and children made for a sombre Thanksgiving holiday this year. It’s hard to know how to respond to such atrocities. What we can be thankful for is that our own Senators have already condemned these actions. (Nancy Pelosi has been a little busy this week getting nominated for the Speakership with overwhelming support. Much more on that to come.)
As ever, this administration’s failings force us to remain vigilant on multiple fronts. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) won a short-term reauthorization earlier this year, but that lapses on December 7th.
You may remember that this law was Joe Biden’s signature legislative achievement, and his tacit apology for his shabby treatment of Anita Hill in the confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas. Christine Blasey Ford’s courageous testimony against Brett Kavanaugh is a sobering reminder of how little has changed.
ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW
Call all three MoCs and ask them to vote YES on H.R. 6545: The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2018.
