It doesn’t have to be this way

Every day, about 40,000 people languish in US county jails and for-profit prisons, without the right to a phone call, an attorney, or a speedy trial. Some are children. All are detained immigrants. This system is funded by taxpayers – that’s you and me – to the tune of $2bn every year.

This was not always the case. Before the 1980s there were only about 30 to 3,000 people in immigration detention on a given day. But then in 1983 and 1984 two private prison companies were formed that lobbied for laws to expand immigration detention and our mass incarceration system.

It’s a cruel scam. It doesn’t have to be this way. Family reunification and bond funds are far less expensive and more effective, not to mention infinitely more humane.
