If the people lead, the leaders will follow

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
~ Rep. John Lewis

This week was hard. I don’t want to sugarcoat this: we are facing a long, hard battle and we’re going to have to deal with losing sometimes. But I wanted to point out some key wins we’ve achieved recently, some good news you might have missed.

The movement to abolish ICE is becoming a mainstream Democratic position. We did that. Two anti-immigrant bills went down in flames this week. We did that. And yesterday, hundreds of thousands of people in 750 cities came together to protest family separation and other inhumane immigration policies. We did that.

More good news: a federal court ordered the Trump administration to reunite the immigrant families they ripped apart.

Never forget: this is OUR country. WE have the power. Electeds must do what the people want, or lose their seats. We can have the America we dream about, but only if we fight for it. We’re going to be asking you to step up your activism in the months ahead, to save the Supreme Court and elect Democrats in November. But right now, we’re asking you to take care of yourself.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Take some time for self-care today. Book yourself a massage. Go for a walk in Golden Gate Park or Glen Park Canyon. Get friends and family together for a meal. Settle in with a great novel. Whatever recharges you, whatever makes you feel good, do it for yourself today. You can use this Activism Self Care worksheet to help jot down ideas.
