The DOJ plans to assess the job performance of immigration judges on how quickly they hear cases and how many cases they close. Judges must clear 700 cases per year – almost three a day – to achieve a “satisfactory” rating. Attorney General and white supremacist Jeff Sessions has admitted that the aim is to speed deportation.
As the National Association of Immigration Judges points out, quotas will undermine judicial independence and erode due process. Our immigrant brothers and sisters aren’t just numbers. They are not a backlog to be cleared. They are people.
Our Members of Congress and their staff members aren’t necessarily familiar with these new rules. Let’s make sure they know where we stand.
ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW
Call (or use Resistbot to contact) all three of our Members of Congress and ask them to make a clear statement against case quotas for immigration judges, and in support of due process and basic human decency towards immigrants.
