House Speaker Paul Ryan won’t seek re-election in 2018.
History will be no kinder to him than Ryan himself has been to American’s most vulnerable people. As a legislator, he was cruel in principle, and ineffective in practice. He’ll be remembered for his failures to take health care and social security away from poor people, and for his passage of a tax bill so regressive that it will propel the federal deficit to over $1 trillion.
Ryan claims he is retiring at 48 in order to spend more time with his family. In fact, he faced a tough re-election battle against Randy “@IronStache” Bryce, an Army veteran and union worker who outraised the Speaker by $1.75m in the first three months of 2018.
Even with Ryan out of the race, Bryce’s victory is no foregone conclusion. Remember the death of Antonin Scalia, and how it led, via Mitch McConnell’s professional misconduct, to the appointment of Neil Gorsuch. The Republican party has a deep bench of cruel and unprincipled people. We cannot afford to be complacent.
